Biography of Captain Randall R. Raney
Captain Randall “Ralphie” Raney recently retired from the United States Marine Corps on June 1, 2025 after 20 years of service.
Captain Randall Raney was born in Terrell, Texas on September 29, 1984. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 2005. Upon graduating from Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego in June 2005, He attended Marine Combat Training in Camp Pendleton, California. In July of 2005, he attended Avionics A-School in Pensacola, Florida, and in January 2006 attended F/A-18 Avionics Technician C-School in Lemoore, California. In April 2006, Lance Corporal Raney was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, VMFA(AW)-225, aboard MCAS Miramar, as a Communication/Navigation/Radar Systems Technician. In September 2006, Lance Corporal Raney was meritoriously promoted to Corporal, and later that month went to MCAS Yuma in support for Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course. In August 2007, Corporal Raney deployed with VMFA(AW)-225 to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He returned; was promoted to Sergeant in July; and recognized as NCO of the quarter for VMFA(AW)-225 and MAG-11. In September, he volunteered to be a part of Police Transition Team 15 responsible for advising and providing assistance to Iraqi police with issues concerning logistics, training, and maintaining supplies. After returning from his second deployment in September of 2009, Sergeant Raney returned to VMFA(AW)-225. In September of 2010, he went on Unit Deployment Program to Iwakuni, Japan.
In October 2010, Sergeant Raney was selected for the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP). He returned from his deployment from Japan in March 2011 and then reported to NROTC San Diego in August 2011. In August 2012, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Captain Raney earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness Specialist from San Diego State University. Upon commissioning, Captain Raney reported to The Basic School (TBS) at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Virginia.
Selected for military flight training via competitive air contract at TBS, Captain Raney reported to NAS Pensacola in the summer of 2016. Selected for follow on training as a MV-22 Osprey pilot, he was designated a naval aviator in the summer of 2018. Upon completion of MV-22 initial pilot training, Captain Raney reported to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 165 MCAS Miramar, San Diego, CA. Captain Raney has served as the Squadron Adjutant, Airframes Division Officer, Squadron NATOPS Officer, and Squadron Assistant Logistics Officer. Captain Raney recently completed a deployment with VMM-165 (REIN) in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit Westpac 21.2, returning February 2022. Captain served as an MV-22B Aircraft Commander, Basic Instructor Pilot, and Functional Check Pilot.
In June 2022, Captain Raney reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Upon his arrival he served as a Series Commander for Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. After three training cycles, Captain Raney served as Charlie Company Executive Officer for two training cycles and was subsequently selected to Command Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion. Captain Raney served as the Company Commander for Delta Company for three training Cycles. During his time at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Captain Raney’s Drill Instructor teams transformed 2,873 civilians into United States Marines.
Captain Raney’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd award), and Drill Instructor Ribbon.
Captain Raney is married to the former Kirsten Kelso of Prineville, OR. The Raneys have three children.
